January 2009

We’ve just returned from our Christmas break but must tell you about our beautiful Dec. 20 celebration at Santo Nino.  Eighty-some children and their families gathered for a prayer and anointing service led by Columban Father Denny O’Meara.  He began by reminding us that Jesus always welcomed children and scolded those who tried to keep them away.  “I have a friend who loves me – and his name is Jesus!” we sang together.  Then each of our special children, their siblings and their caregivers received a blessing and anointing.  Most amazing was the relative quiet as Fr. Denny, Sister Janet and Kika proceeded around the very large circle.  It was a profound experience of reverence and affirmation of each life.

Next was our Christmas banquet and at the end of the meal we had a visit from Santa Claus!  You cannot imagine the excitement!  Parents and children alike pressed close to Santa for photos and to whisper their Christmas hopes in his ear.  Rosario, Siba’s daughter, had prepared stockings stuffed with goodies for each child.  During Santa’s visit another blessing unfolded.  In the massage room Fr. Denny baptized tiny Ricardo whose health is very fragile.  “Let the little children come to me…” As each family left the clinic they received a warm outfit for their special child, assorted games and coloring books for the other children, and a gift certificate for the local supermarket for their Christmas dinner.

We resumed services on Jan. 13 and everyone was so happy to be back.  We realize how important the support the women receive from each other is.  There was a feeling of genuine joy to be together again as they came into the clinic and started their massage, exercise and bathing regimens with their children.  Adding to the excitement was the news that Mari (the recently-baptized Ricardo’s mom) had delivered a healthy baby girl on Jan. 10.  And she came with the newborn, Ricardo and her 4 year old daughter Leslie!  We will be exceptionally vigilant with this baby since last year at this time she lost another son to the same syndrome that afflicts Ricardo.  When we asked the name of her new daughter Mari gave a shy smile and said, “Milagros!” (Miracles!)

In the midst of so much uncertainty and violence in Mexico these days, Santo Nino is a haven of hope.  Please pray for peace, the establishment of law and order and the safety of our families.
